I grew up in the 80’s listening to pirate radio stations like JFM, INVICTA & KISS FM that played the then underground jazz-funk and soul music I loved so much. mainstream radio stations like Radio 1. largely ignored dance music of all kinds, so pirate radio was the only way to get access to underground music. After my family relocated to Surrey from West London, I struggled to get a decent signal sometimes, but still kept true to the faith. We would attend bank holiday all-dayers (the early version of the modern music festival ) in South London to hear our favourite DJ’s spin and watch our favourite DJ’s like Gilles Peterson and Tony Monson. I watched a documentary short called PIRATE RADIO and it took me back. The documnentary is just 15 minutes long and gives a potted hotory of pirate radio form the days of Radio Caroline where they broadcast from a ship in the English Channel up to the pirate-turned internet stations like RINSE FM.
